16th December
225
sir,
With reference to Admiralty letters 1.3349 of 5th
August and M.02152 of 22nd August, I am commanded by My
Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty to transmit herewith
copy of a report, which has been received from the
Commodore at Hong Kong through the Commander-in-Chief,
China, respecting the taking up of the Steamship■ "TUNO ON"
and "TUNG KWONG".
2. It will be seen that the Government of Hong Kong are
clalming that the Imperial Goverment may bear any deficit
which may be incurred in the running of the "TỪNG ON".
From the report of the Commodore, it appears to the Admiralty to be proper that any such deficit after 24th July should fall on Imperial Funds; but that prior to the 25th July the deficit should fall upon the Goverment of
Hong Kong and that Government should also pay a proportion
(the Admiralty would suggest one-half) of the cost of the
naval officers and orewa.
3. I am to remark that the "TUNG ON" and the "TUNG KRONG"
have now both been paid off.
Secretary,
Treasury.
